Have your home electrical panels inspected.
The electrical panels in your home are one of the most important parts of your electrical system. Most of the energy you consume pass through the breakers, lugs, buss bars and wires and create alot of heat. With this heating and cooling comes contracting and expanding of the metals and connections made within the panels. Dissimilar metals in the electrical system can also cause problems such as rapid deterioration or corrosion of the parts.
A loose neutral in your panel can sometimes cause overvoltage and burn up your appliances. Some vacuum cleaners, blenders, and other small appliances are not cheap these days and will only take a second to be detroyed by overvoltage. We have had many calls with this problem and It is typical in newer homes aged 5-15 years old. These have been costly problems that could be avoided with a simple check up of the electrical system.
It is a good idea to have a licensed electrician inspect the system periodically- maybe every 3-5 years. A thorough inspection should take about an hour depending on how large the structure is and the electrician should check everything from the meter socket to the breakers.

Light bulbs burning out frequently?
Do you have problems with incandescent light bulbs burning out shortly after installing them? Next time you buy bulbs be sure to look for the voltage rating of the bulb. Buying 130 volt rated bulbs will usually stop this problem.
The drawback of buying these bulbs is that they use a little more energy and burn slightly dimmer. This is usually not a problem to me because I only use incandescent bulbs in lighting I use a dimmer on anyway– C.F.L.’s are the way to go for any other lighting.
One reason this could be happening is that there is a voltage “spikeâ€. It is probably not a bad idea to contact an electrician to check the voltage coming into your house. The utility has guidelines to adhere to for voltage regulation and if the levels are to high this could cause severe damage to electric motors and other components. Higher than normal voltage will shorten the life of appliances such as dishwashers, garbage disposals and fans.
How unlicensed contractors can cost you time and money
When deciding on an Electrical Contractor you should understand the importance of licensing and insurance. Many “handymen†will perform the work of an Electrician but do not have the license or insurance to perform this exact scope of work. Many do not have the proper training or basic knowledge of how electricity works, grounding a system properly for safety or the proper techniques for working on an electrical system.
In early 2009, an HVAC installer and his apprentice were working on the roof of a strip mall to install a new cooling package. The apprentice went to gather some materials while the installer stayed on the roof. While leaning over the edge of the roof to pull up the materials, the installer came in contact with the frame of a sign for a tenant in the strip mall. The installer was immediately exposed to around 500 volts of electricity. Rescue crews arrived on the scene but were unable to resuscitate the worker.
After a thorough inspection, it was determined the electric sign was wired incorrectly. The sign was missing the proper grounding system and therefore caused the accident. Had there been a proper grounding system the breaker would have tripped, clearing the fault. A deeper inspection revealed that over the years, many other repairs had been made using substandard methods by “handymen“ or, unlicensed Electricians.
For your next repair or project, remember to ask your contractor for the proper licensing and insurance for the scope of work being performed. A qualified Electrician will have the knowledge to make your electrical system safe and free from hazards such as fire and electrical shocks.
